Medicine Currents Exhibition

In fall of 2023, the Carleton University Art Gallery mounted Norval Morrisseau: Medicine Currents, co-curated by Anishinaabe curator Danielle Printup and Scots-Lakota curator Carmen Robertson. The companion exhibition, Christian Chapman: Run to the Hills! was also curated by Printup. Anishinaabe artist Christian Chapman (Fort William First Nation) is heavily influenced by Morrisseau’s art and the playful traditions of Anishinaabe storytelling. This exhibition featured his homage to Morrisseau, titled Copper Thunderbird.

Medicine Currents offers a profound sense of the artist’s transformational and nurturing vision of land, sky and water. This exhibition unveils the healing aesthetic in and power embedded within Morrisseau’s work, which draws inspiration from the past, resonates in the present and envisions a transformative future.
